Do you love Barred Owls? Yay! Have you ever seen a plush Barred Owl? Boo! For some strange reason, they are a popular species but have virtually never been represented in plush. The International Owl Center is all about sharing accurate and detailed information about owls, and we especially like to teach about the sounds they make so you can identify the owls living in your neighborhood.
By pledging to this campaign, you are helping us to create a scientifically accurate plush Barred Owl and educate kids of all ages around the world about what they look and sound like.
Background
In the spring of 2023, a little 3-week-old Barred Owl was found on the ground near Tomah, Wisconsin. One of his eyes was cloudy and he had a hole in his wing, so he went to the Coulee Region Humane Society for rehab. The vision issues and hole in his wing were permanent so he couldn’t survive in the wild, but thanks to his sweet personality he was well-suited to become an educational ambassador. He moved to nearby Houston, Minnesota to work at the International Owl Center and was named Pierce because something pierced his wing when he was a little owlet.
Pierce, like his species, is very vocal, and is likely to hoot for Owl Center visitors in late winter and spring. Barred Owls make a crazy variety of sounds, so the plush version of Pierce will play several actual recordings of him!
