Why Support?
Pacific Mammal Research is a small 501(c)3 scientific research nonprofit that studies harbor porpoises and harbor seals in the Salish Sea. These species are top predators that play a critical role in a healthy ecosystem. Our mission is to learn more about their behavior, ecology and population dynamics through long-term, non-invasive tracking of individuals with photo-identification (photo-ID). We are one of only a few organizations in the world conducting long-term photo-ID on harbor porpoises. Our work with harbor seals is unique because we focus on their in water behavior, compared to most studies that focus on when they are hauled out on land. Our work provides unique data that is critical for creating biologically meaningful conservation measures in the Salish Sea and beyond, because we can’t protect what we don’t understand. Funding is one of the biggest obstacles for non-profits. Your support of this pledge helps us continue our work including consistent field work (going on 12 years), mentoring students/interns, engaging the public through presentations and volunteer opportunities, and contributing to the protection of these species and a healthy Salish Sea.
Background
Meet Pointer the harbor porpoise! This isn’t just any harbor porpoise, this is our most sighted and well known individual in our study population. Pointer is very much an ambassador for her species. Since 2018 she has been seen over 150 times in 9 years and has had at least 5 calves, and we just observed her with her 6th calf this month! Watching Pointer over the years we have learned about feeding, reproductive and parenting behaviors. Her story shows how important it is to know the individuals in the population. These ambassadors can provide amazing insights into harbor porpoise daily life, helping us to reveal the secret lives of these often elusive animals.
